The Queensborough Lady Tigers saw their hopes of a fifth consecutive CUNY Title come to a crashing halt at home, against the upstart Lady Panthers of BMCC. The top seeded Lady Tigers squandered a 17 point lead in the second half, and saw the game and the title slip away.
After a back-and-forth start the game was tied at 10, before QCC went on a 16-7 run and the Lady Tigers went into halftime up 26-19. QCC came out sharp in the second half, and after a Jaclyn Torres three extended the lead to 46-29 with 13:49 to go, and a win seemed all but certain.
However, the Lady Panthers ran off 14 consecutive points and QCC’s was 46-43 with under nine minutes to go. A Kelena Marshall three momentarily stopped the bleeding and with 8:23 to go QCC led by six. BMCC came out of the timeout with regained confidence, and when Christina Best banked a shot off glass with 5:18 remaining, BMCC had a shocking 51-50 lead.
After Latasha Harris split two free throws the game was tied at 51 with exactly five minutes to go, Gabrielle Alleyene recaptured the lead with a floater, putting BMCC up 53-51. Kelena Marshall was called for a technical foul, gift wrapping another point for the Lady Panthers. Two more baskets made it 58-51 with 1:40 to go, capping an unfathomable 29-5 run.
Thirty seconds later the lead was back to three after a Sabrina Rodriguez lay-up, a steal, and a Latasha Harris lay-up. After each team made two free throws it was 60-57 with under a minute to play. After two more free throws it was 62-57 and after a last ditch comeback effort was halted, BMCC had escaped with a stunning 65-59 victory.
