The QCC Percussion Ensemble presents two works from different traditions on their first concert under the direction of Dr. Neeraj Mehta, Assistant Professor of Music at QCC. Stridulations, the first work on the concert, is written by Billy Martin, drummer of the jazz-funk trio Modesky, Martin & Wood, and uses graphical notation to evoke music that is reminiscent of avant-garde composers John Cage and Morten Feldman. In the multi-movement work, members of the ensemble present their collective interpretations across a wide selection of percussion instruments and found objects. Following Stridulations, the ensemble performs Los Dandies, a traditional Comparsa that comes from the streets of Havana, Cuba during carnival time and combines vocals with intricate polyrhythms that have their roots in Afro-Cuban folkloric drumming.
